Cameron Wurf will make his debut for the Champion System Pro Cycling Team when the Tour de Taiwan begins Saturday with a circuit race in Taipei City.
The Australian, who was sixth at his country's national time trial championship earlier this year, will be joined by sprinters Anuar Manan and Steven Wong and formidable all-around talents Adiq Othman and Gang XU.
“I think this is a super venue for Cameron," Champion System Pro Cycling Team General Manager Ed Beamon said. "It represents a great opportunity for him to take on a leadership role. I also think it’s significant that we start one of Asia’s oldest UCI events with a predominately Asian roster that I feel is as strong as any in the race."
Manan had three top 10 finishes at the Tour de Langkawi, including third place on Stage 3, while Othman was fourth on the fifth stage of the Tour de Langkawi on the way to 19th place overall. Gang saw extensive action as part of the team's roster for the Tours of Qatar and Oman.
"No doubt it is the strongest field yet for a Tour de Taiwan, but we’ve brought a really solid squad and I think we have a good opportunity for strong results here," Beamon said.
Saturday's opening stage of the seven-day race includes five laps of a 10.4-kilometer circuit through the streets of Taipei City. Beamon said the appearance of Asia's first pro continental squad – which competes on Fuji bicycles – couldn't have been more perfectly timed with the Taiwan trade show that is also taking place. Fuji was started in Japan and now features factories in Taiwan and China.
“Fuji is making a big commitment to the Asian market and it’s a great and unique chance for us to be able to have them nearby while we are racing in Asia," he said.
