Champion System's Kemps Runner-Up On Tour of China Stage 2
Champion System Pro Cycling Team's Aaron Kemps was second and Anuar Manan finished eighth Saturday on Stage 2 of the Tour of China while their teammate, Gang Xu, retained the white jersey as "best China rider."

Alexander Serebryakov of Team Type 1 beat Kemps in the sprint at the end of the 10-lap, 100-kilometer circuit race. Kemps said he tried to save his energy by riding in the field for the majority of the race.

"The last few laps a couple of our guys took me near the front at the last hairpin turn," he said. "Then I just freelanced and managed to get on the Team Type 1 train with a kilometer to go. I tried to kick past Serebryakov but he was too strong. Hopefully I can move to that top step later in the tour."

Kemps said he recently changed his training regime after a mid-season virus sapped his strength. "The three weeks before I came here I changed my training from less riding to more time in the gym and trying to put on some weight and power," he said. "So I am hoping I get better on the bike as the race continues."

Champion System Assistant Director Chris Wherry said the team will continue to cover breakaways while protecting Xu's "best China rider" jersey he earned on the strength of the team's fifth place in Friday's team time trial that opened the six-stage race.

"The guys did a really good job of getting Aaron to the front with three kilometers to go today," Wherry said. "He was perfectly placed on the back of their train but was unable to come around for the win."
