Minami Shinshu,Japan - Champion System Pro Cycling Team's Ryota Nishizono moved into fourth place overall following a top 10 finish on Wednesday's Stage 3 at the Tour of Japan.
"It was a great ride by Ryota," Champion System General Manager Ed Beamon said. "Arrendondo is the guy to beat for the overall, but the solid performance by Ryota put a lot of distance into his other GC (general classification) rivals."
On the peloton's final lap of the 148-kilometer, 12-lap circuit course, Pierpaolo De Negri (Vini Fantini-Selle Italia), Fortunato Baliani (Team Nippo-De Rosa) and Julian Arredondo (Team Nippo-De Rosa) attacked. Nishizono and three others followed. The front group stayed away to the finish, with De Negri winning.
Arredondo finished third, enough to move him into the overall leader's jersey. Nishizono crossed the line in ninth and is Champion System's best-placed rider in the overall classification, 24 seconds behind.
Thursday's stage is only 11.4 km, but climbs more than 1,000 meters up Mount Fiji. Beamon said Nishizono - the Japanese time trial champion - has been training for this particular stage for months.
